DNV sets up China Containership Service Center in Shanghai

DNV Classification Society announces the establishment of the "DNV China Containership Service Center". Located at DNV's Greater China headquarters, the center aims to strengthen DNV's support for shipowners who undertake global containership orders in China, and help Chinese shipyards cope with the complex challenges of transitioning to more sustainable, efficient and technologically advanced ship construction and operation.

Currently, Chinese shipyards are leading the global container ship newbuilding market. In the next few years, more than 70% of the world's new container ship orders will be built by Chinese shipyards, including a surge in orders for ultra-large container ships using alternative fuels, dual fuels and a capacity of more than 24,000 TEUs. Although container ships are not the largest in terms of the number of orders, recent reports this year show that their total order value is close to US$50 billion - far exceeding any other ship type.

Norbert Kray, Senior Vice President and General Manager of DNV Greater China, said: "The establishment of this center demonstrates DNV's commitment to driving maritime change. The container shipping industry is facing an unprecedented exciting time and we are witnessing the future of the industry. China is the core region of global container shipbuilding and we are committed to enabling local shipyards to share top industry resources with global customers. DNV has built more than just a service center, but also a collaborative platform that brings together shipowners, shipyards, industry stakeholders and DNV's global experts to jointly develop solutions to keep the shipping industry at the core of global trade today and in the future."

The center integrates DNV's global network, professional technology, local insights and local expert teams, focusing on the four core pillars of the future of container shipping, providing customers with collaborative innovation and standardized solutions:

• Newbuilding Excellence: Provide classification approval, risk assessment and quality assurance for ultra-large container ships (ULCVs), alternative fuels and dual-fuel ships

• Decarbonization and Alternative Fuels: Covering LNG, methanol, ammonia fuel and hydrogen fuel ship design, fuel transition strategy and emission compliance consulting

• Digitalization: Providing smart ship solutions, including AI-driven energy efficiency optimization, cybersecurity and digital twin technology

• Energy efficiency management: Assisting in the implementation of advanced hull design, propulsion systems and energy-saving devices to meet EEXI/CII requirements

Øyvind Pettersen, Vice President of DNV Group and General Manager of China Technical Center, added: "Chinese shipyards are at the forefront of container ship construction technology. Customer needs have run through the entire chain from design to operation, covering new fuels, advanced systems and digital integration. The newly established service center accurately connects these needs, provides shipyards and shipowners with a localized single docking window, and shares DNV's leading global technical resources in the container ship field."
